Secondly, there is a bit of an internal logic problem that gnawed at me. Grianne Ohsmford, the High Druid of Paranor, is despised and plotted against from within her own order. With The High Druid of ShannaraBrooks has once again burst onto the fantasy scene and re-established himself as a master of the genre!

He has his own little piece of magic though the magic itself seems to be dying out as it’s diluted along the Ohmsford bloodline that is seemingly useless but becomes appropriate for the mission at hand.

Pen Ohmsford is descended from the line of Jerle Shannara, the first of the Elven Kings, but his own magic seems small and inadequate when measured against that of his aunt’s enemies, who will stop at nothing to thwart Pen’s efforts to rescue his aunt and restore the nascent Druid Council.

It was first published in Still, I don’t think many non-fantasy readers would enjoy his books the way any reader could enjoy Tolkien.

After the lackluster Voyage of the Jerle Shannara series Ilse WitchAntraxand MorgawrI had hoped Brooks wouldn’t visit Shannara again for awhile, as that series was very similar to all of his other books and didn’t offer very much new.

Jarka Ruus, begins another fantasy in the Shannara series with some of the usual Shannara tropes – a young Ohmsford rruus into adventure as the worlds last hope, enemies hunting him down to see that he fails; and yet there are some added elements to keep the story fresh. I hope that Brooks can maintain this quality, or even exceed it. There is a parallel between this series and Jerle in the fact that another male relative of Grianne’s has to save her.

Her purpose is to defend the Four Lands from anarchy and warfare.
